A septic tank is an underground wastewater treatment system used in areas without mains sewers, separating solids (sludge) from liquids (effluent) through natural settling and anaerobic digestion, with the liquid then dispersing into a drain field for further soil treatment, requiring periodic sludge removal for proper function.
The plant works initially by anaerobic digestion in the primary chamber, then aeration in the second chamber, where diffused air and mobile filter media ensure full treatment before the treated water flows to the final settlement chamber. The final effluent is then discharged to a drainage field or watercourse.
